Mindfulness Training (English)

    his training includes eight 3-hour weekly meetings. The practical part of the training is based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction protocol of Kabat-Zinn (1995). In addition, the training includes a wide range of practical exercises, aimed to enhance the integration of mindfulness in daily life. The theoretical part of the training is developed in collaboration with Maastricht University. During the weekly meetings attention is devoted to participants’ personal experiences of the past week and a short oral presentation will be given by the trainer in order to explain the main theme of every session. There is always room for questions during the presentation and the session in general. The atmosphere in the group is open and friendly, with respect for participant’s privacy (what participants disclose during the weekly sessions is kept in strict confidence).

     

    Structure
    Each week of the training program focuses on a specific theme. The order of the theme’s is chosen carefully, to enhance the understanding and experience of the complex concept mindfulness. First, the most important building blocks, attention and the present moment will be addressed. Next, topcis like automatic behaviour, goals, judgment, compassion and identity will be considered. For every topic, weekly exercises are available that aim to increase the practical application of the topic at hand. Moreover, literature and an extensive selection of online video’s are  available online (see also the section “materials”). Participants determine the amount of time investment and level of exploration. Research, however, shows that more practice leads to stronger effects.

    Goals
    The present training is different from a “regular” mindfulness training offered elsewhere. During the development of this training, the primary goal was to create a profound and comprehensive understanding of what mindfulness entails. This is not achieved only by practice and experience, but also by paying attention to the underlying processes and scientific evidence. Mindfulness is often perceived as a strategy that can be applied in difficult situations. Mindfulness is a lot more than this. It is a way to cultivate a more balanced relationship to reality, and can better be understood as a way of life instead of a temporary strategy.  Mindfulness entails many different aspects, like for judgment, acceptance, attention, etc. By choosing one specific component of mindfulness on a weekly basis, we hope to give a more clear understanding of  the nature of mindfulness and it’s different aspects.

    The most important goals of the training are:

    • Being able to apply the different forms of mindfulness meditation, like for instance the body scan and sitting meditation.
    • Integrating mindfulness in daily life
    • A clear understanding of the psychology behind mindfulness. After participating in this training you know the answer to questions like for instance: “What are the main components of mindfulness?”,“Why is it so hard to stop thinking?” and “How can we unlearn automatic patterns of thinking and behaviour?”.
    • Become aware how your wellbeing is affected by automatic patterns like worrying, rumination, judgment, fear, self-criticism and being preoccupied with goals, the future and the past.

    Manual
    The manual is developped by trained professionals and researchers. The booklet will be used as a general guidance of the training. You will find psychological backkground information on the weekly topics, advice and tips for meditation, references and “homework”. A clear and consistent structure and layout is used.

    Audio
    You will receive an audio cd (or mp3 cd) with different versions of the meditation exercises. The goal of this cd is to guide you during the mindfulness practice at home.

    Video
    Participants get access to the online part of the training. The website contains a wide range of video’s, categorised and labeled carefully. They can be used to enhance further understanding of the weekly topics.

    Literature
    The website also contains literature. This literature is not mandatory, but is available to everybody who seeks (scientific) deepening. All articles are available as pdf-documents.

    Daily mail
    Participants receive (if desired) a daily mail during the training period. This mail includes a quote regarding the topic of the week at hand and serves as a reminder.

  • All participants get access to the socalled “content website”. This website contains a lot of addtional information like films, meditation advise, books, metaphores and audio files. Below you will find some screenshots of the website.

  • This training may benefit everybody who wants to live with more awareness and is interested in the practical as well as psychological background of mindfulness. The training is suitable for for people who have no or little experience with mindfulness but also for people who already participated in a “regular” mindfulness training program.

    More specifically, scientific research shows that mindfulness training has benefited people reporting a variety of conditions and concerns:

    • Stressincluding work, school, family, illness, aging, grief, uncertainty about the future, and feeling “out of control.”
    • Medical conditions—including chronic illness or pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, cancer, heart disease, asthma, GI distress, skin disorders, and many other conditions.
    • Psychological distress—including anxiety, panic, and sleep disturbances.
    • Prevention and Wellness—including health enhancement and wellness focused on prevention and learning the “how” of taking good care of yourself and feeling a greater sense of balance.
